The aim of the £842m New South Glasgow Hospital was to integrate two of the city’s major hospitals with other specialist units on one large site, allowing the adult and children’s facilities to benefit from a shared location while maintaining their own distinct identities.
It was the biggest single NHS building project in Scotland and required a huge range of lighting solutions, from illuminating the vast public atria to lighting specialist areas such as operating theatres and laboratories. Across the new buildings, luminaires that offered an outstanding user experience together with compliance, effective infection control and sustainable energy use were required.
Working closely with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde along with contractors including Brookfield Multiplex and Mercury Engineering, Whitecroft supplied around 160 different healthcare lighting products appropriate to the many interior and exterior spaces within the new buildings. With patients, clinicians and visitors all having their own lighting needs; it was important to balance these requirements while also delivering on quality and meeting the energy expectations of the organisation as a whole.
Several years on from the company’s initial involvement in the Glasgow hospital, we have further strengthened our range of healthcare-specific LED products, enabling today’s health sector projects to enjoy the best possible lit environment and significant long-term savings.
